Confirmation

For on him the Father, God, has set his seal. (John 6:27)

Our Confirmation program for teens begins in 9th grade and continues through the 10th grade year. For additional information, contact Brian Christopherson, Confirmation Coordinator at bchristopherson@stolivers.com

To register a student for Confirmation please register online, or at our 2024/2025 Faith Formation Roundup on Sunday, August 4, 2024 after all masses.  Please note that all students must be registered with Life Teen and Confirmation is a two-year preparation program.

If you were registered as a first year student in 2023 you must register for the second year program!

At confirmation we receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit and confirm our baptismal promises. Greater awareness of the grace of the Holy Spirit is conferred through the anointing of chrism oil and the laying on of hands by the Bishop.
Confirmation perfects Baptismal grace; it is the sacrament which gives the Holy Spirit in order to root us more deeply in the divine filiation, incorporate us more firmly into Christ, strengthen our bond with the Church, associate us more closely with her mission, and help us bear witness to the Christian faith in words accompanied by deeds. (CCC 1316)
Through the Sacrament of Confirmation we renew our baptismal promises and commit to living a life of maturity in the Christian faith. As we read in the Lumen Gentium (the Dogmatic Constitution of the Church) from the Second Vatican Council:
Bound more intimately to the Church by the sacrament of confirmation, [the baptized] are endowed by the Holy Spirit with special strength; hence they are more strictly obliged to spread and defend the faith both by word and by deed as true witnesses of Christ. (no. 11)

Scriptural Foundation for Confirmation

In the Acts of the Apostles we read of the coming of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost. While baptism is the sacrament of new life, confirmation gives birth to that life. Baptism initiates us into the Church and names us as children of God, whereas confirmation calls us forth as God’s children and unites us more fully to the active messianic mission of Christ in the world.

After receiving the power of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, the Apostles went out and confirmed others, showing confirmation to be an individual and separate sacrament: Peter and John at Samaria (Acts 8:5-6, 14-17) and Paul at Ephesus (Acts 19:5-6). Also the Holy Spirit came down on Jews and Gentiles alike in Caesarea, prior to their baptisms. Recognizing this as a confirmation by the Holy Spirit, Peter commanded that they be baptized (cf. Acts 10:47).

Confirmation SPONSOR Forms

It is important to begin prayerfully considering WHO your Confirmation Sponsor will be. Because Confirmation is so intimately associated with Baptism, one of your Godparents may be a wise selection. If this does not seem appropriate to you, then consider another Confirmed Catholic who will support you on your faith journey. Your sponsor’s Pastor will need to verify that your sponsor attends Mass regularly and participates in the parish community.

Please choose your Sponsor and turn in the completed Sponsor Certification Form to Brian Christopherson by April 28th, 2024 for IGNITE Year 1 Confirmation Candidates.

Confirmation FIAT Forms

FIAT Service Projects work for both IGNITE (Year 1 Confirmation) and BLAZE (Year 2 Confirmation). Service Projects will be done on your own and when available as a group. There are three FIAT service projects due each year. You must complete one form of service within each of the three categories Family, Church, and Community. All three categories need to be completed to have finished in full the service requirement of Confirmation catechesis. To receive credit your child’s name, the date, the organization in which service was performed are all needed! I am providing your teen with a template to fill out when they do service projects as I know that not every organization has this record readily available. No hours are counted so please choose a service that fits your family's availability. I am simply asking that one act of service is performed in each of the three categories each year of Confirmation preparation.

Please note the three categories.

  • Family service is done by either having the IGNITE or BLAZE Confirmation candidate perform some service for the family. The other family option as a family, complete a service project together.
  • Church service is offering aid to a St. Oliver’s church ministry through the various events held at the parish or as a volunteer within the Religious Education department.
  • Community service includes anything that you do to help the community and may include hours you are already completing with another group such as Scouts or Highschool Clubs.
